My kids and I attended the Al Kaly Shrine Circus at the Penrose Events Center and despite the cold and rainy weather we had a blast watching both the animal and human acts. My girls had never been to the circus before so they were excitedly awaiting the start if the circus. They were enthralled with the human performers and a highlight was the girl who shot a bow and arrow with her feet!
My biggest complaints about the circus would be the weather (which they can't really help) and that everything was cash only. In a world where many deal in plastic it would have been nice to at least have been able to pull cash out of an ATM so my girls could do more of the extras. Before the show and during intermission, you can ride ponies, the elephant, or the camel as well as get a picture with Spiderman or get your face painted. Then venue may have been nice had the weather been nicer, but with the unseasonable rain and cold it was quite miserable by the 2nd half of the show and many people left. We stuck it out to see the elephants perform and it was worth the wait!
This circus had a good mix of human and animal acts with quite a few interesting stunts. Highlights for us were the tigers, the balancing boards, the trapeze, and the giant wheel. The giant wheel was probably one of the best acts...All the kids in the arena went crazy for this one! My girls also enjoyed the dogs, but thought the horses could have done more. I felt both acts left something to be desired since the quality of these acts was not up to par with what I've seen on TV and in other circuses. The only act that everyone disliked was the clowns. I felt the content in their first act was geared towards adults and my kids barely even chuckled. There was one act they did with some instruments that was funny.
Overall, the Al Kaly Shrine Circus was a neat experience that could have been better with a venue change. There were some very neat acts and some that could have been better, but it was fun to watch and the kiddos had a blast!
Disclosure: I received tickets for a family of 5 for free in exchange for posting about the circus and writing a review.
